The machine research.cs.colorado.edu had a bad and active users from that machine will be moved to "home.cs.colorado.edu".

This weekend, email will no longer be directed to or received by research, and home.cs.colorado.edu will not receive email. People using that machine should migrate mail to Office365 which provides 50GB of mail space (see http://goo.gl/579AXZ).

The machine "home.cs.colorado.edu" will run IMAP, meaning you can access mail files stored on there. and http://goo.gl/579AXZ has directions on how you can retrieve mail messages to your laptop or e.g. home.cs.colorado.edu

The new "home.cs.colorado.edu" will have a webserver that will serve static content from ~/public_html, so if you use that for web pages, you're golden. If you've used research.cs.colorado.edu in the last year, your directories will be copied over for you. Other directories will be archived.

Graduate students can use csel.cs.colorado.edu (see https://goo.gl/6u8qbV) for directories & web pages.

Other web presence, such as per-research group, will be handled as below.

  • We will redirect personal webpages like http://www.cs.colorado.edu/~yourname to any web site you like.
  • If you have a public-facing research group site like XYZZY.cs.colorado.edu or www.cs.colorado.edu/XYZZY and you can provide a website for it using other resources, the DNS or website will redirect to it. This is what is currently done by e.g. http://epic.cs.colorado.edu and http://plv.cs.colorado.edu (both use github pages -- see https://goo.gl/9QUHKd)
  • Consider using the campus provided SharedPoint (http://goo.gl/tzGwJ1)
  • If you need a website like XYZZY.cs.colorado.edu and don't want to use github or need a "dynamic" site, you have two options:
    • The department will pay $5/month for a sufficient webserver for a research group (e.g. https://www.digitalocean.com/ or wordpress hosting sites listed at http://goo.gl/z6YK7W ). You are responsible for management, but the department will redirect XYZZY.cs.colorado.edu to your site.
    • Or, you can provide a "docker container" (https://goo.gl/gk3xTo) that will be hosted by the department. Detailed directions will be provided later. If you don't know what this is, then consider the other options above.

You should indicate your choice and provide information by going to the following Google spreadsheet (you'll need to use your colorado.edu account).

https://docs.google.com/a/colorado.edu/spreadsheets/d/1AehXwRj3VnFfiR4v9w6y0sfx02x_uuYRu4rmuGUAaC8/

If there is existing data you need from research.cs.colorado.edu (e.g. mysql data for your webpress install or whatever) , you should log into research and pull it off within the next two weeks and likewise your wordpress files.

The move of home directories from research.cs.colorado.edu to home.cs.colorado.edu will start on Monday. Jason Hill will be the person moving the home directories. Once a directory is moved over, the account will be shut off on research.cs.colorado.edu.

The web server www.cs.colorado.edu that currently points to research.cs.colorado.edu will point to home.cs.colorado.edu starting monday as well (it may occur in the middle of the day). That means your www.cs.colorado.edu/~NAME web pages will be available only on home.cs.colorado.edu

The new system will not be running "imap" which is the mechanism that is used to store folders in mail clients. You should move your IMAP folders from research to office 365 over the weekend. If you do not know how to do this, Scott Mathews from desktop support will help you do that.

Graduate students who have accounts on research.cs.colorado.edu have been notified that their directories will not be moved and they'll be responsible for moving them to csel.cs.colorado.edu. We will set up a mechanism for www.cs.colorado.edu/~NAME redirect later.

All existing directories on research.cs.colorado.edu have been backed up to Amazon S3 and will be retained for a long time.
